About Us
Keeping the Lanterman Promise (KTLP) was created by family members and friends of individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities. Our loved ones are clients of California’s 21 Regional Centers. It is the goal of KTLP to educate, inform, connect and inspire our members and supporters.
KTLP is a growing group of individuals who care about the preservation of the Lanterman Act and the 1985 California Supreme Court decision that created a contract between the State and its citizens with intellectual and other developmental disabilities – a contract that is now breaking apart. By coming together and sharing information, members and supporters of KTLP can be a part of an effort to restore, defend, and preserve the Lanterman Promise.
In 2009, after years of gradual weakening of the rights and services guaranteed under the law, the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) and the State Legislature took actions that reduced the rights of children and adults with intellectual and other developmental disabilities. As California’s budget crisis continues, it is now clear that unless family members and friends stand up and demand to be heard, these rights will be lost completely.
Whether your son or daughter is an infant or toddler served through Early Start, currently in school, grades K-12, an adult, or even a senior citizen, you know that California’s commitment to people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities is crumbling; it is up to KTLP members and supporters to preserve it. Our love for our children, family members and friends is the only thing strong enough to stop California from breaking the Lanterman Promise.
KeepingTheLantermanPromise.org is a place where people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities, their families and friends can find out what is happening to the Lanterman Act in clear, candid, no-nonsense terms.
